Activision Inc. and id Software have announced that Quake Wars will be released for both the X360 and PS3 consoles, under third-party development. The X360 version will be developed by Nerve Software, and the PS3 development will be handled by Z-Axis. id Software will be overseeing both developments as the executive producers.

Nerve Software is a six-year-old independent developer based in Dallas. Their previous developments have all been major hits with their respective communities. Nerve tend to focus on creating games which are engaging on multiple-levels, from visuals through atmosphere and right down to the core gameplay mechanics. Titles under their belt include the Xbox releases of Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War and DOOM3: Resurrection of Evil as well as the multiplayer component of Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the PC. Needless to say, they have a history of coordinating with id Software, and working on the Xbox platform, so the X360 version of Quake Wars will definitely be done to a high standard.

Z-Axis, an Activision subsidiary, have handled console developments almost exclusively - bringing titles such as Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX and X-Men: The Official Game into the limelight. They've done extensive work with PlayStation-exclusive titles, and their backlog suggests that their experience with the platform is extensive enough to allow the PS3 version of Quake Wars to live up to the legacy set by it's PC counterpart.

The console releases of Quake Wars will feature the same style of gameplay. Each side has five unique classes with their own skills and equipment, with a variety of vehicles and deployable units which can be brought to bear against the enemy team. Players will have to work together to overcome the opposing force and successfully complete their objectives with a mix of clever strategy and dumb luck. The game will be structured as a campaign consisting of several battles, throughout each of which players will construct and fortify bases, deploy defensive weapons and counter-measures, and employ the terrain itself to gain every advantage possible..

The console versions will feature online play, stat tracking, persistent promotions, and global rankings. In addition, the X360 and PS3 releases will have a capacity limit of 16 players per game.

Altough it won't affect me, I still think that this is a very positive progress Two Thumbs Up!
